From the Pierre Bouchet / Pierre Jean Mathan atelier archives.

A highly important and exceptionally coherent ensemble relating to Pablo Picasso’s illustrated book Six Contes Fantastiques by Maurice Toesca, comprising rare original preparatory material dating from the initial conception of the project in 1944, as confirmed by the Roman numeral date MCMXLIV present on several related title studies.

This remarkable group originates directly from the working archives of the celebrated typographic atelier of Pierre Bouchet, later preserved and transmitted through his successor Pierre Jean Mathan. Pierre Bouchet was responsible for the ornamental initials of the published edition, while Mathan continued the atelier tradition and worked with Picasso, Dalí, Zao Wou-Ki and other major 20th century artists.

The final edition of Six Contes Fantastiques was issued by Flammarion, Paris, in 1953, though Picasso had already executed the engraved plates in 1944. This ten-year delay makes surviving preparatory material from the original wartime conception exceptionally desirable and historically significant. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

The present work reflects the creative and production process behind one of Picasso’s most sought-after illustrated books, offering direct insight into the collaboration between artist, publisher, engraver and atelier during a pivotal moment of modern French publishing.
